Rhymes for Reading is a collection of 60 photocopiable, phonically decodable rhy
mes for children working on Phases Two to Four of Letters and Sounds, which enab
les children to practise and apply phonic knowledge in a 'real' reading context
from a very early stage. The rhymes feature a range of simple poetry forms and c
ommon Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 themes, such as the seasons,
family and school, and can be used throughout the year in phonics sessions and i
n other areas of learning. Accompanying teaching notes focus on phonic skills, v
ocabulary and comprehension, and help you to use the rhymes in your phonics teac
hing.
They include: advice on using the rhymes in shared and guided reading;
suggestions for practical follow-up activities; ideas for making links to writin
g; phonic knowledge charts to summarise the graphemes and tricky words in each r
hyme; discussion charts to encourage reflection and develop understanding. Desig
ned as a resource to be dipped into, Rhymes for Reading does not have the precis
e grading of a phonics reading scheme and is suitable for use with any increment
al phonics programme.
